I just received this marketing message from 1&1 and I thought I'd just pass it through to you...

At 1&1, we make every effort to offer our customers the most advanced technology and services available in the industry. For this reason, we have decided to include unlimited traffic with all of our webhosting packages and online shops.

Now, you don't have to worry if you exceed the monthly transfer volume limits in your package!

Unlimited traffic will allow you to offer downloads to your visitors, add flash animation or other types of high resolution graphics to your site.

In the past if you had more traffic than your package included, you had to pay an additional $0.49/GB. Unlimited traffic means you can rest easy, instead of paying additional fees for a successful website.

Your advantages:

  • More visitors to your site will not mean more money out of your pocket.
  • Transfer large files via FTP and don't worry about added fees.
  • Offer file downloads without concern for a huge bill at the end of the month.

If you're an AdSense publisher or a web surfer going to AdSense-supported sites, you've probably seen how slow the pagead2.googlesyndication.com gateway can be.

In fact, when that particular address is called up, the entire web page seems to freeze for 10 to 20 seconds.

This apparently has nothing to do with people's firewalls, OS or browser.

A large number of AdSense publishers have pointed out that these problems have started after Google purchased its competitors and started integrating their lousy advertising inventory in the PPC ad engine.

If you're looking for culprits, it seems you'll have to look at DoubleClick which is probably dragging its feet and slowing down the whole Google AdSense operation. It's a theory that's as good as anyone else's.

In the absence of a formal Google response, we're basically left out to speculate about what causes the pagead2.googlesyndication.com gateway to be so supremely slow.

Let's hope this issue gets resolved...

If you've been thinking about paying hundreds of dollars for EllisLab's ExpressionEngine instead of going with WordPress' open source script, think again!

WordPress 2.8.1 is WAY BETTER than ExpressionEngine 1.6.3, on almost every front — if not all of them, period.

Both WP and WP MU (multi-user) are entirely free and open source so you can't go wrong, pricewise. ExpressionEngine does have a free version but it looks severely handicaped compared to the paid versions. Not that there's something wrong with that but WP is free and that's a huge fact to consider.

Then, working in WP is just totally awesome. The interface just flows!

In ExpressionEngine, it feels weird from the first click. It looks unfinished and oddly designed. For instance, the entry fields are extremely large, which makes entering data somewhat tiresome (because it's so large).

I could go on like this for hours on end but suffice it to say that although EllisLab had a winner a few years back, their current ExpressionEngine is no match for WordPress, themewise, pluginwise, pricewise and... pleasurewise.

WordPress is rock solid and used by millions of web publishers.

So if you absolutely need to waste some time and check out ExpressionEngine by yourself, be my guest but unless you're a hardcore EE fan, you'll probably be wasting your time more than anything else.

If you're weary of domain name price hikes, you'll this one by 1and1.com, regarding the ".name" extension, to be pretty sneaky.

You see, with 1and1, you can't register your name for —let's say— the next 10 years (at today's rate), you're forced to renew the names you hold there every year, at that years' rate.

Most people probably saw it coming since they held competitive prices for a while but still, the price bump that's just been announced shows that their strategy was to lock in customers with lower fees and then, pretty much out of the blue, just jack the prices up when they domain has been developed and is in use.

Other businesses have done it before but still, from a customer standpoint, it feels like a ripoff.

Keep in mind that the "cost" for ".name" domains hasn't changed so this latest hike is 100% driven by 1and1's hunt for more profits.

Here's part of the message that ".name" domain name holders received, from 1and1...

Customer ID: ----------
Contract ID: --------

Dear -------- ----------,

This is a friendly reminder about the forthcoming automatic domain renewal for the listed domains in your 1&1 package ----------. The domains listed below are due to expire in 39 days on ------ -- 2009.

------.name
---------.name

Please be advised that as of June 2nd, 2009 the fees for .name domain name registrations will be increased from $8.99 to $12.99 per year. This price increase will take effect as of your next billing cycle.

No action is necessary on your part - as part of our service, domain renewal is automatic, so that your 1&1 hosting services will be able to continue uninterrupted.

However, please make sure that your payment details are correct and up-to-date in the 1&1 Control Panel, to ensure a smooth renewal.

Log in to the 1&1 Control Panel with your customer ID and password at https://admin.1and1.com/xml/config/ChangeCCDataPrep

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact our expert Support Team.

Sincerely,

Your 1&1 Internet Team

Pretty slick, right?

They just bumped the price of ".name" domain names by 3$ per year. Just like that!

And customers can either pay up, transfer the name elsewhere or cancel their name. Most people will just pay up but still, it shows that 1and1.com was a bargain at first but over time, the prices will not be that attractive, anymore.

1and1 has a lot going for them. It's somewhat sad to see them hike prices up, like this.

Oh! Well, life goes on...

Big auctions like this one are few and far between, in Canada.

PHP coders know the value of huge domain names like job.ca which bring...

  • natural visits;
  • unbelievable visibility;
  • strong brand recognition;
  • unbeatable memorability;
  • lucrative new customers; and
  • instant credibility.

Whatever's going to be built on "job.ca" is bound to be big.

If you'd like to bid (and win) this 3-letter, super-generic ".ca" domain name, contact MyID. They'll be holding the special auction for "job.ca" on June 24-25th, 2009.

Don't miss this opportunity to own what, according to many people, could well be the most valuable ".ca" domain name, ever.

Good luck to those who will participate in the bid... and let's hope the winner will know how to code PHP ; )

After creating Mathematica, Stephen Wolfram has done it again with the creation of a new search engine called WolframAlpha.

Here's the main goal of this search engine, as stated in their web site:

  • WolframAlpha's long-term goal is to make all systematic knowledge immediately computable and accessible to everyone. We aim to collect and curate all objective data; implement every known model, method, and algorithm; and make it possible to compute whatever can be computed about anything. Our goal is to build on the achievements of science and other systematizations of knowledge to provide a single source that can be relied on by everyone for definitive answers to factual queries.

    WolframAlpha aims to bring expert-level knowledge and capabilities to the broadest possible range of people—spanning all professions and education levels. Our goal is to accept completely free-form input, and to serve as a knowledge engine that generates powerful results and presents them with maximum clarity.

    WolframAlpha is an ambitious, long-term intellectual endeavor that we intend will deliver increasing capabilities over the years and decades to come. With a world-class team and participation from top outside experts in countless fields, our goal is to create something that will stand as a major milestone of 21st century intellectual achievement.

Getting the answers directly from within the search engine is both a blessing... and a curse.

You see, WolframAlpha seems to stick with the "official story" on anything you request from it. As such, it has next to no perspective on the alternative data which would add depth to any answer, as is the case when you visit several web sites after querying Google.

So even if WolframAlpha provides quick answers which are sometimes amazingly useful, it's clear that people won't stop using the major search engines. Having many sides of a story is the best way to ensure that a situation is truly understood and as you may be aware of, for just about any matter, there are many ways to get down to the bottom of things.

For all things black and white, there's WolframAlpha and for everything else (the proverbial shades of gray), there's Google and other similar engines.
